Bountiful Autumn

"I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift."
– Dodinsky

“The heat of autumn is different from the heat of summer. One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider.”
~Jane Hirshfield

The backyard no longer green
Autumn leaves cover the ground
Some floating in the stiff breeze
Little eddies round and round

All the tree branches stripped bare
But no berries can be found
Except the Chinese holly
Lonely in the corner mound

Yes, the year’s almost over
And the whole world winter bound
Now’s the season to give thanks
For the blessings all year round

Fruit trees bare but harvest done
There’s bounty for everyone
