Sixteen Seasons

For Charlotte. She turns five next month.

Only four springs have you grown,
Yet judging from what you bemoan,
And from the pleasures that you share,
You’ve proven everything you are.

For you have only felt the warming
Of four summer suns performing
O’er the climbing, caves and sand
That you experience firsthand.

Indignation in your fists,
You’ll ne’er know how much I have missed,
But four falls could not help detect
The pain you’ve seen, or the neglect.

Four whole years, now almost five
Have passed since first you came alive.
I watch you grow more every day
And count the frozen winters gray.

Every year you reach new heights,
You make new friends and found new fights,
But each season of time’s incline
Makes me more thankful that you’re mine.
