eye glasses on your nose

...as we age seems that time
becomes shorter...a minute becomes a thin second...ndr

                 eye glasses on your nose

time seems to speed up as we age
a minute feels like a thin second
months like a few days
the last few days of anticipation
like before an event drag on for kids
for adults just around the corner they are
July is when we sing
Christmas carols

we forget by evening the breakfast we had
what we need from the basement
we went upstairs instead
we can recall the details of a new experience quite well yes
but forget where the car keys are

“are we there yet?” bored kids in the car
  constantly ask
the sense of time moves rather
quickly for adults... slow it down we wish

but can we?

you wake up in the morning at noon
you wonder if there was a sunrise
you get up routinely you did exactly
you did day before... before
you can yawn one more time
you now see it is dinner time

break out it is time
get out of your cocoon
step over all the thresholds
that make a year like a month
make that minute
a sixty second minute again

break out completely naked
make a routine of new things to do
that require more time to learn
try a new recipe you’ve never seen before
take routes you never took on your walks
that Brazilian tango do it Arthur Murray
  style... just do something different

step out of repeated sequences
out of the box like folding a whole pizza
into your mouth... gone... and you burp
time flies lightyears faster
  for older adults
than it does for younger much younger
  adults
the same space of time can feel very
  crowded
anxiety takes over you blinked you’re lost
you took Monday’s meds on Sunday

explore
new pathways smell the roses with the
  butterflies if you can
visit the dark places in the moon your time
make new friends call that person
  you locked eyes with
a cup of hot chocolate date maybe
sing together a poem you both never knew

expand
dance the dance of life with a friend
touch the sunsets stretch with the sunrises
whatever you do do it with zest
take time to learn doing something new
will gain you new brain cells... plenty
to keep hold some new memories
will help find your car keys
there in your pocket... you smile
find your way to basement... you laugh
find your eye glasses on your nose...
  you laugh at yourself
now you see it’s not dinner time yet
