The workingman’s poet

He never writes about the flowers
Or the field or the trees, or the birds
He wants more than rhyming or description
To emerge from his written words

So he writes about ordinary people
For he is ordinary too
And he writes for ordinary people
that means he writes for you

He never uses intellectual quotations
Or words you can’t understand
He writes in plain simple English
To the people throughout the land

You can stuff your correct spellings
The double meanings and la de dah
He doesn’t write for a limited audience
He writes for the crowded bar

Yeh!
Poetry’s not just for the posh guys
Like it was before he came
It’s not now an English exercise
For English teachers playing a game
You don’t have to interpret his writings
Or write books about his worth
For he is the workingman’s poet
And his words are down to earth

Now we know poetry’s never been popular
Because it was written for only a few
It was written by them and for them
But his words
There written for you!

So come on all you workers
Housewives or whoever you are
Let’s start reading and writing
More poetry
And let’s make it popular!
