Silence

Silence rings over the field
The soldiers stand to arms
Tension creeps along the ground
Slithering its tendrils into those at either side
Sprouting fear in the hearts of young men and old ones alike
The sun glares down, its indifferent beat weighing down on the soldiers
The wind whispers, speaking words of ill fate into any ear it can reach
The silence, malignant and vile, grips at the throats of either side, squeezing the air out of them
A man stares over the wasteland left
He sees one like himself on the other side
So close
So alike
And yet worlds apart
Enemies
The air wraps around them
Thick, viscous
Eating away at their very souls
Innocence is lost in warfare
Until all that remains
Is silence

A poem going back to my first days of poetry, many of which were about war. I hope you enjoy!
