Growing Up

I don’t know that you will ever understand how you’ve hurt me and how hard I’ve tried to be better than what you’ve expected. Maybe in time the desire to be right will succumb to compassion and a need to grow, maybe you will become more mindful of the seeds you sew. I don’t know if you will ever understand what it is to sacrifice, to serve without reward, to tell the truth when it hurts, to extend your heart when you’re wrong. I don’t know if you will grow to cherish another  when they are at their worst, to choose respect when it means vulnerability, to guard another’s character, reputation, and soul, to be safe to receive messy emotion, to be grounded in your truth so you can anchor another.  I don’t know if you will ever know how to love.
