An Old Man’s Prayer

i went to the park for my Sunday stroll
but tired quite so soon and had to rest
i got my paper and sat on the knoll
a fruit fly buzzed near and acted the pest

i folded a page to swat it away
but my aged arm began to fall asleep
i became engaged in making it pay
and lost track of time i needed to keep

and a jogger nearing i didn’t see
else i’d have stopped missing to adore her
an angel’s face on a stripper’s body
with clothes on that just as well make her bare

she paused in her tracks to look at me
an old man, playing the fool with a fly
she smiled sweetly, as best as she could be
then nodding at me, she continued by

she was just passing through or so i thought
a young beauty amused with an old man
if i’re younger what the moment could’ve brought
the fantasies of a passionate fan

i forgot about the fly, he the same
at peace my mind’s prayers wandered to her
i closed my eyes and had thoughts not too tame
i laughed but heard a much sweeter laughter

i opened one eye and saw her two feet away
smiling at me with red lips ready to mate
i looked up at heaven sky as if to pray
but curse the gods instead for answering too late
