Early Morning in Amarillo

Cow Country

Early Morning in Amarillo

I stepped outside this morning, to smell the morning air
An odor filled my nose, I didn’t know from where
The grass was green in the yard, flowers still were blooming
The odor came from somewhere else, it was all consuming
There was moisture in the air; the wind came from the west
I coughed and choked in a breath, then felt it in my chest
The smell was faintly remembered as I thought of days gone by
Twas from the days of milking cows, now I thought of why
A huge cow lot near Highway 40, was just up the road a bit
Locals say it smells like money, I say it smells like something else.
