For crooks like us

For little Jamerson: I hope you will understand.

For, crooks like us, we rush into a place with four walls.
The layperson calls it jail.  We might receive some mail–
If crooks like us are luck-y.

For crooks like us, there are freebies
Like soap, a comb, and a pretend telephone.
Pen and paper and if you stay for long enough,
A stamped envelope!

For crooks like us who care alot,
There’s a small little room with a cuff-spot.
A camera is on in there around the clock
And you are allowed to walk.

For crooks like us it’s exciting to know
That people sent birthday cards (even though)
You aren’t allowed to read them.

For crooks like us, it’s nice to talk to some friend on the other side
Of a dial
Tone.
It’s especially nice to know that though it seems so,
Jesus never left me
Alone.

For crooks like us are a sad ole case.
Made mistakes that won’t ever be erased.
And when the future has to be faced,
It’s a daunting race that will surely be placed as last.

But Jamerson,  my little son, know that it doesn’t matter who you are because at the end of the race, first, last, or somewhere in between, there will be someone cheering you on.
Little Jamerson, life is short and can be sooo long.  For crooks like us, we can curl up in the corner and sing a happy song.
