Did Your Mother

When you stood up
After two seconds of living
Did your mother say “I love you”?
When you got broke
Western and bareback
Did your mother say “I’m proud of you”?
When you ran off to play
With a cute little colt
Did your mother say “I trust you”?
When you got a new home
And was willing to go along
Did your mother say “I believe in you.”?

When you were scared
I said “It’s Okay”
When you were excited
I said “We’ll be alright.”
When you were lame
I said “We’ll get through this”
When you were down
I said “I love you.”

You’re a lucky horse
You got me who loves you
I’m your mom now
And I care about you
I love you
I’m proud of you
I believe in you
I only wish
My mother would say
The same thing to me

(2012)

This is one of my deeper poems about the relationship between my mother and I.
