Like Mother Like Daughter

They say I look like her
They say I sound like her
They say I have her nose
They say I’m just like my mommy

When I was three
I gave her my pacifier
For a big girl’s bed
I went to school
and she helped me add 2+2
I grew up and yelled at her
Because I swore she hated me
But

I am an un-regrettable mistake
My mom graduated high school
With a baby in her arms
Got married to my daddy
the un-regrettable mistake was the flower girl
The un-regrettable mistake
She raised me good
She raised me right
Told me the truth
And prepared me for life
We laughed, we yelled, we cried and she told me
I was a mistake, she would never regret

She had dreams
She had ideas
Now I know where I get it
And though she’s never told me
I know she loves me

(2012)

The relationship between my mother and me.
