Name

You called me a name
Said you didn’t mean it
Said you were sorry
That you were just trying to hurt me.
But that name has been a part of me.
Once upon a time,
That name showed it’s horrible face
To this naive fifth grade kid.

That name was found finally
After years of its unnoticed effort
To take my mom away from me.
But we found that name
And we didn’t let it.
We fought and fought.
As God held my hands
And told me somehow
That everything was going to be okay.
And it was. We did it.
That name became a memory.

Fast forward five years.
The name comes back.
Buries itself again in the task
Of taking the life of a young girl’s mom.
This time, there’s nobody to hold my hand.
No imaginary voice saying that He will fix it.
No.
He’s gone.
It’s just us now.
Us and that damned name.
That name you called me.
That name is going to kill my mother.
