How humans survive

She was an open book
But no one could ever read between the lines
There was meaning streaked in every silver hair
Pain folded in every crease on her face
History was hidden in plain sight.

Her bangles told a story
Of sons lost and days past
Her scars sang a ballad
Of vows that had gone sour
Of love that had gone too far.

She carried an ocean in her eyes
So silent yet so tumultuous
Witness to the moulding of the present
Her eyelids drooped down
As if from the weight of unspoken words.

She once was truly alive
A heart so pure, it put a lily to shame
A face so radiant, it made the moon blush
But every lily withers
And every dawn the moon fades.

The war took her identity
It took her family, her home, her pride
But she carried her father’s words with her
“When the days don’t rhyme anymore,
Remember, somewhere, the sun still shines”
